THE GATE AT DAN - WHAT HAPPENED?

Looking through the city gates at Dan When a city was captured, its citizens were either killed gruesomely or taken into captivity, to be sold as slaves. Such would have been the fate of the people of Dan. Before they were killed or taken away, the leading citizens of the city/state were ritually humiliated at the city gates, and items of significance were smashed in front of them, so that the would appreciate how powerless they now were. This is probably how the Stele of Dan was broken into pieces, then left in the dust to be found by archaeologists many centuries later.
