CITIES
JESUS AT THE HOUSE OF ZACHAEUS
When people read the Gospel story about Jesus and Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10), they probably don't realize that Jericho at that time was the second largest town in Judea. Only Jerusalem was larger. Zacchaeus was an important, powerful man in this large city - which makes it even more incongruous that he clambered up a tree to see Jesus. It's an endearing thing to do: to forget your own importance and get so carried away with enthusiasm that dignity no longer matters. This obviously appealed to Jesus. Being of humble social status himself, he realized how hard people strive to get ahead, and how zealously they guard their dignity when they do. Not that people approved of Zachaeus. He was a tax-collector for the hated Romans, and socially beyond the pale. Think of someone in the modern world whom everyone loathes, and you'll understand why people were so shocked at Jesus' acceptance of Zachaeus' hospitality.
