EXCAVATION OF PRE-HISTORIC WALL
Excavations show the depth of the tel at Jericho, The Neolithic watch tower (above) was built and destroyed in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic era, in about 8000-7000 B.C. The 8m diameter tower stands 8m tall and was connected on the inside to a 4m thick wall. There was no stone at Jericho, so mud bricks were used from the earliest times (see the photo below). Though they required constant maintenance, they were cheap and easy to manufacture. The excavations show how the different levels were built one on top of each other, so that the level of the most recent city became higher and higher.
