ROYAL REGALIA OF A QUEEN

Kings and queens have always worn special regalia and elaborate jewelry to denote their rank - see Ancient Jewelry for examples of necklaces, bracelets, and diadems from ancient times.

At her Coronation, the young Queen Elizabeth II wore a cloak and train, gold-encrusted gown and royal crown so heavy that she could hardly move under its weight. Every part of every article she wore had some particular significance.

Jezebel did this when she faced Jehu. She put on the heavy make-up and rich clothing of a queen and a royal priestess of Baal. This was her ceremonial clothing, proclaiming her rank to all the world.

Moments before she did this, she saw the young King, her son, shot down and trampled at the gates of the city. She knew she could not survive the day. All she could hope for was a quick death.

She guaranteed this by facing the usurper Jehu and shouting insults at him as he rode into the central courtyard of the palace. He responded by ordering her eunuchs to throw her down onto the hard stone pavement below. This they did.

Peplos Kore as Athena; luxurious clothing was given to the statues of goddesses; this is probably similar to the type of garment worn by an Eastern queen of the period

This may be similar to the type of garment worn by Queen Jezebel
