Shell-shocked Soldier, Vietnam - Don McCullin

Don McCullin's iconic photograph of a soldier paralysed with shock.

This photograph did a great deal to alert people to the trauma of battle, and the long-term effects it would have on soldiers fighting in Vietnam - or in any other war.

Combat fatigue results not just from the terror of battle, but from emotional conflict, shock and exposure to sights and sounds too terrible for the human mind to cope with. These are usually related to loss of comrades, leaders and group support.

The Vietnam War, for example, produced large numbers of veterans with behavioral and drug-related problems. But it is not confined the modern soldiers - the battles described in the Bible would have produced similar effects in the soldiers who fought them.
