THE SEAL OF JEZEBEL?

An ancient seal, possibly belonging to Jezebel

This seal, from the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, may have belonged to Jezebel, wife of King Ahab of Israel.

There are arguments for and against it being her personal seal:

  • its origin is obscure; it was not obtained in an official archaeological dig
  • the missing piece at the top may or may not have contained a letter essential in the spelling of 'Jezebel'
  • the letters spell only part of Jezebel's name

But it seems to be from the right time period for Jezebel, and is the size and material suitable for a royal person.

One question: wouldn't a seal belonging to Jezebel have been deliberately smashed during the sack of her palace on the day she was murdered? (For this story, go to Top Ten Bible Murders)
