EUNUCHS KILL JEZEBEL

Jezebel is thrown from a high window by her eunuchs

Jezebel is thrown to her death

Eunuchs, poor things, were used in palace harems because they had the strength of a man but could not impregnate the royal wives. They were ideal servants for the royal harem.

The story of Esther at the court of the Persian king (the Book of Esther) shows how a eunuch could make or break the future of a young woman in the harem. When Gai, the eunuch in charge of the women, groomed Esther for the position of Queen, he earned her lifelong gratitude, and expected to be repaid (see Book of Esther with Additions, chapter 2).

But eunuchs could also be dangerous, and undermine a member of the royal family. Their loyalty could not be relied on - as the story of Jezebel shows. When her eunuchs realise that Jehu has won the day they switch sides immediately, and throw Jezebel to her death.
