Excavations of a multi-level building in Jezreel

We are looking down into different levels of a large public building in ancient Jezreel.

Its structure is something like the palace of Knossos (see below) - though the two buildings are of course from different periods and areas.

The builders of ancient cities were forced to use as many levels as they could, because space was at a premium. The area on top of the tel or hill-top was always limited. No important building could stand outside the city walls.
