DAVID PLAYS FOR SAUL

David Plays for Saul, by Rembrandt

'David Plays for Saul', Rembrandt

Tormented by doubt and suspicion, Saul finds relief for a moment in the music David plays. But the sumptuous cloth Saul holds before his eyes cannot hide the future.

Note the end of David's harp, which Rembrandt has cleverly shaped like the blade of a sword. Enmity between the two has already begun.

Note too the ambivalence of David's expression, and his lowered head half turned from Saul. Rembrandt has captured something paintings usually gloss over: David's complicity in Saul's impending death.
