CONTEST AT MOUNT CARMEL
Part of the Mount Carmel range A view of Mount Carmel, scene of the confrontation between the prophet Elijah and the priests of Baal. Mount Carmel was a sacred place of worship for thousands of years before Elijah faced the priests of Baal. Many ancient people used 'high places' when they wished to pray to their gods. It's hard to say why this was so, since the practice is so ancient its reasons are long forgotten. Moreover, the idea that God is 'up there in the sky' is a relatively modern one. When a high place was not available, as on the flat river lands of the Nile and the Euphrates, people built elevated platforms (artificial hills) on which they could worship. For images of some of these artificial hills, see Bible Archaeology: Ziggurats. See 'Elijah breaks the drought' in 'Resources' for the Bible text of this story.
