THE IRIS HAYNEI ON MOUNT GILBOA

The Iris Haynei, which grows wild on the slopes of Mount Gilboa, where Saul and his sons died in battle

The Iris Haynei

This iris is native to the slopes of Mount Gilboa, and grows wild around Jezreel.

The Bible text does not mention the time of year that King Saul and his sons were fighting against the Philistines at Mount Gilboa, but spring was a normal time for a military campaign.

If this was so, then Saul and his men may have fought their battle at the time of year the irises were in bloom - beauty and violence tragically mingled.
