MAP OF ISRAEL AT THE TIME OF JESUS
Map showing the position of Nazareth Nazareth was an unimportant village in the northern province of Galilee. It was close to trade routes, highways and the city of Sepphoris, which was a center of regional government. The people of Nazareth at the time of Jesus were Jews, probably descendants of Jewish settlers who migrated there over a century earlier. The position of the village was ideal: secluded and nestled in a hollow on top of the Nazareth Range. An upward incline from the Jezreel Valley to Nazareth limited travel to winding footpaths, so that there was less interaction with the surrounding countryside that you might expect. The large town of Sepphoris was about 4 miles from Nazareth, about an hour-and-a-half walk away after a short climb over the hill's crest, a steep descent, and then a sloping incline.
